State Route 4 Wagon Trail Realignment Project

Overview

Phase 2 of the State Route 4 Wagon Trail Realignment Project focuses on improving approximately 3 miles of the eastern segment of the corridor. The proposed alignment will extend from Stallion Way to approximately 1.6 miles west of the State Route 4/49 junction near Stockton Road.

Funding for the preparation of Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E) in the amount of $4.5 million was awarded by the California Transportation Commission at its August 17, 2022 meeting. These funds are provided through the Regional State Transportation Improvement Program (RSTIP).

Right-of-way acquisition will be funded through an SB 1 Trade Corridor Enhancement Program (TCEP) grant totaling $5.25 million. The required local match will be provided through the RIM Fund.

Purpose and Need

This segment of State Route 4 currently consists of narrow, non-standard lanes with little to no shoulder width. The roadway follows the natural rolling terrain, resulting in frequent curves, elevation changes, and limited sight distance.

The project is needed to:

Improve roadway safety
Increase sight distance
Bring the roadway closer to modern design standards

Strategic Goals

The primary goal of this project is to reduce traffic collisions and enhance overall safety for all users along the corridor.

Current Phase

The project is currently in the planning phase and is included in the County’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP). It is a county-sponsored transportation improvement effort supported by regional funding and prioritized by the Calaveras Council of Governments.

Project development and delivery are being led by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), which serves as the implementing agency. The County will continue to provide coordination and oversight to ensure the project aligns with local transportation priorities.
